I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSEThe Ohio Society of Radiologic Technologists sponsors an annual quiz bowl competition for students enrolled in
JRCERT or other nationally recognized accrediting agency as a vehicle for professional interactions. Although a spirit of competition is encouraged, the function of the event is to review radiography curriculum
content in an interesting format that will foster discussion of technical information relevant to radiologic technology. Professional demeanor is expected of all participants including a respectful approach to
content controversy. II. TEAMS
Teams may be composed of an unlimited number of students:
Team members must be enrolled in and in good standing with the accredited radiography program they represent.
Team members must be student OSRT members in good standing by the quiz bowl application deadline.
Team members must be pre-registered for the OSRT meeting at which the competition is held by the preregistration date. Copies of requisitions for organizational/institutional monies will
be accepted with registration with check to follow.
- A team advisor must be appointed for each team. Advisors must be active OSRT members registered for the OSRT meeting at which the competition is held.
Only three (3) team members may compete in each round.
Only one (1) team may represent a single program.
All team members must be enrolled with the same program.
III. POSITIONS FOR THE QUIZ BOWL COMPETITION
- The following positions will be appointed each year by the quiz bowl committee:
Moderators
Score Keepers
Judges
- Sergeant-at-Arms
IV. MODERATOR POSITION
- Shall receive the question book from the co-chairpersons at the time of the competition.
- Shall read any announcements that may be necessary.
- Shall also be a judge and shall sit at the judge's podium as the third judge.
- Shall not read more than five (5) rounds at any given time.
- Shall read all questions, acknowledge and repeat correct answers, and read answers to incorrect responses in accordance with the competition rules.
- Shall read questions in their entirety, unless a team buzzes in, in which case the moderator will immediately stop reading the question.
- Shall visually verify the score with the scorekeeper judge before proceeding to the next question.
- Shall present slide questions in the following manner:
Say, "This is a slide question."
Alert the scorekeeper, operating the slide projector, to turn it on.
Read the question (The slide stays in view until the question is over)
Follow the same procedure as above concerning questions.
Shall remove themselves from moderating while any team connected to their institution is participating in competition.
V. SCOREKEEPER POSITION
- Shall maintain accurate scores of each round of competition and the tournament bracket advancements on the transparencies, that are readable to both teams, moderator and judges.
Shall remove themselves from score keeping while any team connected to their institution is participating in competition.
Shall familiarize self with the slide projector and the procedure for reading slide questions.
Shall operate the slide projector during each round, including:
Focusing the first slide in round one before the doors open.
Turning the projector light on when told by the moderator.
Turning the projector light off at the completion of the question.
Advancing the next slide forward and turning the projector fan off.
Shall receive verification of all scores from the moderator judge.
VI. JUDGES POSITION
Must be knowledgeable in all aspects of radiologic technology and well versed on the OSRT quiz bowl rules.
Must be available at the start of the quiz bowl competition and free for any given round.
Shall not judge for more than five (5) rounds at any given time.
Three judges shall be present during all competitions (Moderator serves as the third judge.)
Shall determine if all responses are correct and match the printed question answers.
Shall use reference materials for any questionable answer. A maximum of a two (2) minute consultation between judges will be permitted. Answers requiring more than a two (2) minute
consultation will be disqualified and a question from the same category will be inserted. Neither team will be penalized.
Shall determine if a question was interrupted.
Shall determine the score(s) awarded.
Shall decide all questions of rules and score keeping, after consultation with a Quiz Bowl Committee Member.
Shall remove themselves from judging while any team connected to their institution is participating in competition.
VII. SERGEANT - AT - ARMS POSITION
- Shall post themselves at the entrances to the competition room.
- Shall assist in enforcing the rules, especially those regarding entry, exit, note taking and audience demeanor.
Shall remove anyone who is disruptive to the competition.
Shall maintain, that if two rooms are being used, each round begins at the same time.
VIII. QUESTIONS
- All questions will be referenced to established texts from the attached list.
- Grid conversion answers shall reflect answers from multiple references.
- Rounds will consist of the following categories from the ARRT exam content specifications:
- Three (3) questions from Radiation Protection
- Two (2) questions from Equipment Operation and Maintenance
- Three (3) questions from Image Production and Evaluation
- Three (3) questions from Radiographic Procedures
- Two (2) questions from Patient Care
- One (1) slide question from any category and one (1) slide question from Radiographic Procedures, a total of two (2).
- Answers requiring a specific unit must be complete to be judged correctly.
IX. COMPETITION FORMAT
A double elimination tournament format will be used requiring each team to lose twice to be eliminated from competition.
All quiz bowl advisors and officials should attend the pre-competition meeting.
Prior to the start of the competition, teams will be placed into tournament brackets by Quiz Bowl Committee members, under the supervision of an OSRT board member.
Teams who are not present at the time of competition or who forfeit will be counted as a "bye" for the opposing team.
X. COMPETITION RULES
All persons attending the competition shall wear the official meeting registration badge. Team members MUST wear official meeting badges WHILE competing.
Competition rooms shall be sealed with entry and exit prohibited during the actual competition. Entry and exit shall be permitted during the brief changing of team members in competition.
Recording of questions during the competition shall be prohibited. Recording devices of any type or form are strictly prohibited.
Audience participation shall be prohibited.
Judges' decisions are final.
Calculators, pencils, and scratch paper will be provided. Team members may only use the calculators provided. All scratch paper with any written information will be disposed of
before the next round begins.
All questions will be read to two (2) teams in direct competition.
Fifteen (15) questions will be asked each pair of competing teams.
Team members may signal intent to answer a question at any time (but interruptions carry a penalty: see part XI Scoring section).
Questions with slides shall be read after the appearance of the slide, and will, therefore, be scored in the same manner as all other questions.
The signaling team member must be recognized by their light prior to answering.
Answers from unrecognized team members shall be ruled incorrect.
Team members may consult with one another at any given time.
Team members must begin answering within ten (10) seconds from recognition.
Once answering has begun, team members may not pause for more than ten (10) seconds.
Judges may rule a prolonged answer incorrect. As a general rule, any commentary not leading to a direct and concise answer may be ruled prolonged.
The moderator shall read the answer if no team signals intent within ten (10) seconds.
Correct answers shall be acknowledged and repeated by the moderator.
Incorrect answers shall cause the entire question to be re-read to the opposing team by the moderator.
When incorrect answers have been received from both teams, the moderator shall read the answer.
Questions may be eliminated by judges. In these cases, replacement questions shall be read and scoring from the eliminated question deleted.
Teams with tied scores after fifteen (15) questions shall be read an additional set(s) of five (5) questions (one question from each category) until the tie has been broken.
XI. SCORING Scoring shall be:
Plus two (2) points for a correct answer.
Zero (0) points for each incorrect answer when the moderator was not interrupted.
- Minus two (2) points for each incorrect answer when the moderator was interrupted. The moderator shall determine when an interruption has occurred and shall verbally notify the scorekeeper.
XII. CODE OF CONDUCT
Participants and spectators are expected to display proper decorum, professionalism and good sportsmanship. Any individual who is disruptive and/or who violates this code may be removed
from the competition upon the judges' decision and may be barred from further attendance.
- Objections to competition procedures, including judging decisions, are prohibited during the competition. Objections must be submitted in writing for the improvement of future competitions. After
completion of the day's competition, objections will be reviewed by the Quiz Bowl Committee and a member of the OSRT board. Objections and reviews shall not be retroactive nor affect the outcome of any
competition or tournament play.
Alcoholic beverages are forbidden in competition rooms and persons doing so shall be considered disruptive and are subject to removal from the competition.
XIII. AWARDS
A rotating plaque will be presented to the institutional sponsor of the first place team. The program director will be responsible for returning the plaque to a Quiz Bowl Committee
Co-chairperson each year prior to the next quiz bowl competition.
A permanent team plaque will be awarded to the institutional sponsor of the first and second place teams.
A one hundred (100) dollar monetary award will be made to the first place team and a sixty (60) dollar monetary award will be made to the second place team.
A free one-year OSRT "RT" membership will be provided for each first and second place team member who actually competed in the quiz bowl competition.
A certificate of participation will be awarded for each participating team member.
Team members of the first place and second place teams will receive a free banquet ticket, not to exceed eight (8) members per team. However, attendance at the banquet deems appropriate
attire, so team members should plan accordingly. Team advisors are also encouraged to attend the banquet, but must first purchase their own ticket.
Awards will be given at the banquet and official photographs will be taken of the first and second place teams at the banquet.
